The Lanjarón Water Festival is one of the town's best-known and most unique events. Linked to the festive atmosphere of Saint John's Eve, where the famous Water Race takes place, this celebration is part of the local identity and attracts residents, visitors, and people who want to experience one of Lanjarón's most popular traditions every year.
To speak of the Water Festival is to speak of gatherings, summer, participation, tradition, and a very special way of experiencing the start of one of the liveliest times of the year. Around this time, Lanjarón becomes a focal point for those looking to enjoy the festive atmosphere, discover the town, and experience a celebration closely linked to water and local culture.

What is the Lanjarón Water Race?
The Lanjarón Water Race is a popular celebration associated with the Feast of Saint John and also known by many as the Lanjarón Water Race. It is a well-known event on the local and provincial festive calendar and is one of the events with the greatest potential for tourism promotion in the municipality.
Its popularity stems from both its festive nature and the symbolism of water in Lanjarón, an element closely linked to the image, history, and personality of the municipality. Therefore, this festival represents not only a specific celebration but also an expression of the bond between Lanjarón, its traditions, and its identity.
Lanjarón, Water, and Tradition
Lanjarón is a municipality strongly identified with water. This connection is part of its outward image, its tourist appeal, and how many people recognize the destination. Therefore, the Water Race fits perfectly into the town's cultural and tourist appeal.
The celebration is also part of a broader context of festivals, customs, and activities that bring the town to life and make Lanjarón a particularly attractive destination during this time of year. The presence of water as a central element connects the festival to the land, collective memory, and the experience of those who visit the town.
Access and Road Closures
Geography of Lanjarón: The town is structured around a single, very long main avenue (the A-348).
Complete Closure: During the Water Race (which takes place strictly from midnight to 1:00 AM), the town center is cordoned off and completely closed to vehicular traffic, becoming the "ground zero" of the massive celebration.
Time Planning: It is imperative to advise tourists that if traveling by private vehicle, they should arrive several hours before midnight (ideally mid-afternoon). If you attempt to access the town after 10:00 PM, you will most likely find the access roads congested or blocked by the authorities.
Where to Park
The town center has narrow streets and lacks sufficient parking spaces for the volume of the festivities. The most viable areas are:
The Bypass / Castle Area: There is a ring road (the bypass) that skirts the town to the south. Parking in this area or in the large dirt lot in front of the castle ruins is the best strategic option. It allows you to leave your car outside the "conflict zone" and greatly facilitates leaving in the early morning.
Town Entrance (West Area): There is a free public parking lot next to El Salao Park, but it is the first to fill up.
Public Parking: After passing the first parking lot on Variante Street, you will find another one. You will have to turn left and go up a small hill to park at a higher elevation. It is paved and has ample space.
Other designated areas: Areas near the Municipal Sports Center or marked areas on the wide shoulders of the access roads (towards the Water Museum).
Water Race and Midsummer Night
Midsummer Night in Lanjarón is one of the most recognizable events on the local calendar. Within this context, the Water Race has become a benchmark for those seeking a unique, participatory celebration with a distinct character.
The association of Midsummer, summer, tradition, and water reinforces the singular nature of this event and contributes to its visibility as one of the town's main festive attractions.
What Lanjarón offers during the Midsummer Festival:
During the celebration, Lanjarón offers visitors much more than just a single event. The experience can be enhanced with:
Exploring the town center.
Local cuisine.
Accommodation and rural guesthouses.
Hiking trails and the surrounding natural environment.
The town's cultural and festive calendar.
Shops and tourist services.
In this way, the Water Festival also acts as a gateway to discovering the full range of attractions in Lanjarón and extending one's stay in the destination.
Why visit the Lanjarón Water Race? Visiting the Lanjarón Water Race is an opportunity to experience one of the town's most representative events and, at the same time, discover the atmosphere of a destination with an identity closely linked to water, tourism, and tradition.
It is a well-known and recognizable celebration with strong appeal, both for those already familiar with Lanjarón and for those visiting the town for the first time.
The association that collaborates closely with the town council in the creation of the San Juan Festival and the Water Race is the Lanjarón Festival Committee.
It was founded with the purpose of independently organizing the town's celebrations, marking a fundamental milestone in 1980 with the creation of the modern San Juan Festival.
The commission was originally structured with several delegations that operated autonomously from the City Council, aiming for citizen-led management of the festivities. The first celebrations organized under this new model took place in 1980, after being approved the previous year.
The commission has been key in consolidating the famous Water Race, which celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2025. This event has evolved from a local initiative to a festival declared of Tourist Interest in Andalusia.
Today, the Festival Commission works closely with the Department of Festivities to design programs that include: La Pública (costume parade), concerts, and daytime fairs.
